Little Bastions

Flowering Wall 2021

$37

An almost even split of Dolcetto and Pinot Noir, this honestly tastes like it sounds. Plays on the seriousness of both varieties. With integrated tannins and a plushness to the fruit character, this is a light red with a more studious attitude. Beautiful.

Grape: Dolcetto, Pinot Noir
Region: Columbia Gorge, WA
Vinification: From the producer: We are Chase Silcocks and Casey Howland, long time friends who grew up in the high desert of Central Oregon. We farm grapes and make wine together in the Columbia Gorge on the border between Oregon and Washington. The Gorge is an incredibly diverse region of mountains, rivers, and strong winds. This is an alpine region giving way to high deserts to the east, providing us with a continental climate; warm days and cool nights, hot summers and cold winters. Handy for farming organically, and ideal for growing grapes with structure and acidity. Little Bastions began in 2017 when we found three old and abandoned vineyards in the Columbia Gorge and endeavored to resurrect them. We are now farming six different sites in the Gorge and the wines we make are products of these little vineyards as well as a few other sites in our area. We farm organically, no-till, and mostly tractor free. We only source organically farmed fruit from other growers in our area. We bottle without the use of fining agents or filtration, and the small amounts of sulphur used is typically reserved until elevage is complete. The ferments are conducted primarily in neutral oak and acacia barrels with native yeasts and bacteria. Most of our wines spend at least two winters in barrel.
