Susucaru Rosso 2019
Frank Cornelissen is a legend in the natural wine world. His wines have been sold here in the states for over a decade and have been at the heart of many discussions that have shaped the industry. Susucaru Rosso is his estate field blend, comprised of mostly Nerello Mascalese with other local varietals from all his vineyard sites around Etna. It is meant to be, year after year, an example of the vintage and is an excellent introduction to his style, comprising all the elements of his other single-vineyard bottlings.
We love it with… 🍝🍆🍄
Grape: 85% Nerello Mascalese, with the rest made up of Nerello Capuccio, Minella Nera, Allicante Bouschet, and Minella Bianco
Region: Sicily, Italy
Vinification: 50+-year-old vines farmed organically. Hand-harvested, destemmed and lightly crushed. Fermentation starts with a “pied-de-cuve” using only indigenous yeasts and skin contact for about 60 days. Aged in neutral epoxy tanks (2500 liters to 7000 liters). Unfined. Filtered before bottling with cartridges of 3 micron (large filter). Sulfur is the only addition, and values can vary from 5 to 30 mg/l, added or not, depending on the quality of grapes and stability of the wine.
