Limited Addition Old Vine Cabernet Franc 2019
From the winemaker:
This west-facing rocky Nekia volcanic bench of self-rooted Pinot noir planted in 1990 was grafted to two clones of Cabernet Franc in 2016. The decision to graft this plot to Cabernet Franc was a conscious one, Pinot noir on this rocky, thin volcanic soiled site rarely delivered anything more than stressed hard wines but Cabernet Franc here thrives! This wine will reward time in the cellar it is deeply blue fruited with forest, sage and black olive aromatics that weave through the blue plum and violet flavored fruit. We bottle the wine with less that 20 parts of sulfur and without filtering or fining to ensure the fine lees keeps the wine fresh and complete.
Made from the California heritage clone, Steiner. This is the third time we have worked with this fruit and each year we are impressed with the quality and structure it delivers from this hill. A few additional factors combine to create the quality fruit that this site consistently delivers. Willamette Valley’s northerly latitude, provides nearly 2 hours more daylight in the summer than Napa or Sonoma, and delivers the warmest part of the day in the late afternoon. Combined with the west-facing aspect these factors deliver the pyrazine degradation we seek while maintaining moderate alcohols and fresh acidity through the cooling influence of the wind-stricken Van Duzer Corridor, which this vineyard stares down. It delivers small berries with thick skins and concentrated fruit and acidity, all the hallmarks for long aging.
